Build Of The Month
Instagram @Overland_Cam
I’m Cameron Becnel, known as @overland_cam on Instagram. I’m 33 and currently living in Colorado, where I drive a Silver 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road.
I started building my Tacoma immediately, and what began as a simple weekend project quickly became an obsession. Whether I was pouring over online forums for the latest gear or spending hours in the garage fine-tuning my setup, overlanding became a lifestyle that merged my love for the outdoors with the excitement of off-road exploration. My Tacoma is set up for anything the wild can throw at it. From rocky trails to muddy river crossings, this truck is built to get me to the best camping spots and back, no matter the conditions.
Growing up, I was always drawn to nature — camping, hiking, and exploring were my go-to escapes. My goal with this build was simple: create a reliable rig that can take me anywhere, from mountain trails to desert landscapes. There’s nothing better than setting up camp in a remote, quiet spot, surrounded by nothing but the stars and the sounds of the wild.
For anyone starting their own build, my top advice is to focus on the essentials first. Prioritize rock sliders, skid plates, and a full-sized spare. When I first started out, I knew I needed to protect the truck’s vital components from the unpredictable terrain I'd encounter. Having solid protection and a reliable spare tire gives you peace of mind on the trail, knowing you're prepared for whatever comes your way. These upgrades were some of the first I made, and they’ve proven invaluable on every adventure since.
You don’t need a fully built rig or the latest gear to get out and explore. Nature is there waiting for you, whether you have a stock vehicle or a fully modified setup. The most important thing is getting outside and experiencing the freedom of the open trails, the quiet of the mountains, or the beauty of a sunrise at camp. Adventure doesn’t require perfection—it just requires the desire to step out and enjoy what the world has to offer. Start with what you have, and the rest will fall into place.
After spending time exploring and pushing my truck to its limits, my build is evolving from overland-focused to something more suited to handle off-roading. As I found myself loving the challenge of tougher trails and technical off-roading more than I ever expected, my priorities shifted. Now, the focus is on building a rig that can handle the most rugged terrain, while still being versatile enough for camping trips. This transformation has made me realize that pushing the limits off-road is where my passion truly lies, and my Tacoma is adapting to meet that need.Stay tuned for some awesome future changes!
